Dexter Gordon - Six Bits Jones (1962)

Long unavailable in the US until the early 80s, I pursued this LP primarily for containing a side’s worth of one of Sonny Clark’s last appearances. He would go on to record two stunning records in three days with Gordon—Go and A Swingin’ Affaira couple months later. After two more Blue Note appearances—with Jackie McLean on Tippin’ the Scales and on Stanley Turrentine’s Jubilee ShoutClark died of an overdose in January 1963. He was 31.

As you can hear in the sashaying opening to this cut, Gordon and Clark were already developing a deep and sympathetic rapport. Philly Joe Jones and a young Ron Carter underpin the proceedings, and the unsung Dave Burns features on trumpet.
